AB - In this experimental study, picosecond laser treatment was performed on a nickel-based superalloy Nimonic 263, aiming to investigate the surface effects induced by irradiation in different atmospheric conditions and, concerning changes in surface composition, regarding the possibility for improvement of its functionality. Besides the varying laser parameters, such as a number of pulses and pulse energy, environmental conditions are also varied. All surface modifications were carried out in standard laboratory conditions and a nitrogen- and argon-rich atmosphere. The resulting topography effects depend on the specific laser treatment and could be categorized as increased roughness, crater formation, and formation of the laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS). Changes in the chemical surface composition are distinguished as the potential formation of the protective oxides/nitrides on the sample surface. Numerous characterization techniques analyse the resulting effects on the topography and surface parameters. The multi-response parametric optimization of the picosecond laser process was performed using an advanced statistical method based on Taguchi's robust parameter design. Finally, the optimal parameter conditions for Nimonic 263 modification are suggested.

AB - This study evaluated surface wear and resistance to fracture of reciprocating and novel rotary instruments after use in curved canals. Twenty new instruments (n = 5/each group): Reciproc Blue, WaveOne Gold, XP-endo Shaper (XPS) and TruNatomy were used twice for the instrumentation of simulated curved canals in plastic blocks. The instrumentation was performed according to the manufacturer's instructions at body temperature. Surface roughness was evaluated, using a profilometer, before instrumentation and twice after the instrumentation. Instruments were, then, subjected to a cyclic fatigue test to evaluate the time to failure. Differences were assessed using ANOVA and post hoc tests (alpha = 0.05). The XPS instruments showed significantly higher values of roughness compared with TruNatomy at every stage, especially after the second use (p LT 0.008). Reciprocating instruments showed superior cyclic fatigue resistance compared with novel rotary instruments (p LT 0.05). TruNatomy showed minimal surface roughness, and XPS exhibited significantly higher surface roughness.

AB - The surface of a titanium-based alloy Ti6Al4V was subjected to modifications by a near-IR femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser, emitting at 775 nm pulses of 200 fs duration, in single-pulse and multipulse regimes, with up to 400 accumulated pulses, and pulse energies ranging from 2.5 to 250 mu J. The whole range of induced effects is presented, from gentle ablation and pattern occurrence to substantial crater formation. Very observable laser-induced parallel periodic surface structures are reported, appearing both within the damage spot area, with low fluences, and at the peripheries of the craters, with higher fluences-but also on crater walls, and inside the crater structures. Damage threshold fluences (F-th) and the incubation factor (zeta) were also determined.

AB - In this study, the design of surface pattering with the co-existence of micrometer and nanometer features was carried out to improve the arrayed surface structures on Ti/Cu/Ti and Ti/Cu/Zr/Ti multilayer thin films by picosecond laser processing. The novel composite structure consisted of two layers of Ti and subsurface distributed Cu and Zr layers (thickness of 10 nm) were deposited by ion sputtering on Si substrate to the total thickness of 300 nm. The changes in the composition, surface morphology, and wetting properties after laser modification was monitored by Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), optical profilometry, and wettability measurements. It was found that laser irradiation can induce the melting of material with the formation of wrinkled periodic structures at the edges of the laser spots in both systems as a consequence of the hydrodynamic effects. Another interesting result was that the periodic structure in form of LSFL (low spatial frequency LIPSS) ripples was numerous but slightly pronounced in Ti/Cu/Zr/Ti, due to the presence of the Zr component as an ultra-thin subsurface layer, which most likely favored creating LIPSS. Such laser texturing has been used in the biomedical field as a method of developing surface topography, coated with oxides to potentially improve cell response via suitable surface wetting for a biological system.

AB - Results concerning the controllable ablation of nano-layered thin films (NLTF) by femtosecond laser pulses are presented. Investigated samples were titanium-aluminum bilayers, deposited on a silicon substrate, with the top titanium or aluminum layer of variable thickness on the surface. Irradiation was done in ambient air with single femtosecond laser pulses under standard laboratory conditions. The samples were analyzed by complementary methods of optical and scanning electron microscopy and optical profilometry, exhibiting laser-fluence-dependent ablative removal either of the top layer or the entire bilayer or even partial ablation of the underlying silicon substrate. The removal (spallation) threshold fluences for the topmost layer are scalable versus its thickness almost irrespectively of its material, being rather selective for the Ti-coated samples and much less selective for the Al-coated samples. The removal of the entire bilayers was found to be strongly influenced by electronic properties of the underlying metallic layer, dictating the NLTF-Si adhesion, heat conduction, and capacity in the NLTFs toward the NLTF-Si interface and beyond, as well as by their thermophysical characteristics, e.g., almost twice higher melting temperature and enthalpy for Ti. As a result, precise fs-laser machining of the entire NLTFs is pronounced and selective for the samples with the fusible Al at the low-adhesion Al-Si interfaces, compared with the incomplete NLTF removal from the high-adhesion and refractory Ti-Si interfaces.

AB - Results regarding morphological and compositional changes of bimetallic thin film (BMTF), composed of aluminium (Al) and titanium (Ti) nano-layers, by single fs laser pulses, are presented. Laser irradiation was conducted in the air with focused, linearly polarized laser pulses, the duration being 300 fs, wavelength 515 nm, and pulse energy up to 1.2 mu J. Effects of the variations of the pulse energy on the changes were studied. In the experiment, single pulse energy values from 0.03 to 0.08 mu J caused ablation-photomechanical spallation of the upper part of BMTF layer from the Si substrate, without ablation of the whole film. Irradiation at higher pulse energies gradually removed the whole BMTF and even a part of the Si substrate. We explained the influence of different electron-phonon dynamics, in the case of multilayered thin films composed of Al and Ti, on BMTF ablation. Damage/ablation threshold, which is minimal pulse energy/fluence sufficient for starting ablation, was calculated.

AB - Reliable and resilient constructions are basic for ensuring the safety of various structures. The superalloys are used as constructive materials due to their superb mechanical properties and endurance. However, even these materials can have certain areas where the stress concentration is higher than expected, such as drilling holes, which are common in various structures that need additional enhancement. Surface laser modifications of the areas surrounding the holes drilled in Nimonic 263 sheets are done by pulsed picosecond and nanosecond Nd:YAG laser irradiations with pulse durations of 170 ps and LT = 8 ns, respectively. Following the laser surface treatment, the effectiveness of the enhancement was analyzed by the microhardness test and the deformation test. The results show that the deformation and stress values are decreased by 25-40 percent, showing the improvement in the resilience to deformation. The Vickers microhardness test results indicate an improvement in the Nimonic 263 microhardness. The dimensions of the microcracks are higher for the untreated material in comparison to the laser-treated material.

AB - The aim of this study was to demonstrate the potential of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) in the analysis of pottery shards, which are commonly the most abundant artefacts recovered at archaeological sites. The analytical capability of LIBS in identification of elements characteristic to inorganic pigments used for decoration was assessed. Based on the specific elements detected in the LIBS spectra of glazes, correlations between the elemental composition of the glaze and the colours of the glazed surface were established. The results were in accordance with the previously reported Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) and Raman analyses of some of the samples, and with the presently performed XRF analysis. Two important para-meters for plasma characterization, temperature and electron number density, were estimated from the spectral data. A potential use of LIBS for depth profiling was also investigated by analysing the silicon to aluminium intensity ratio as a function of the number of laser shots applied. Profilometry analysis of the damages created on the glazed surfaces by laser shots was used to estimate the average ablation depth and ablated mass.

AB - The article presents promising catalysts, applicable for direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFC) for portable and mobile applications. The goal of this work is development of Pt and Pd catalysts deposited on interactive nanocrystalline Ru doped SnO2 support with improved performance. The structure and the morphology of the prepared metal-oxide catalyst support and Pt and Pd based catalysts were examined using XRPD, SEM/EDX and TEM techniques. Electrocatalytic activities of the prepared Pt or Pd based catalysts were evaluated in both alkaline and acidic conditions. The ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) was studied using conventional electrochemical techniques. The interactive nature of the novel Ru doped SnO2 catalyst support was confirmed, resulting in the enhancement of the EOR kinetics, in comparison to commercially available catalysts. New and simplified synthetic route applied for preparation of interactive catalyst support was presented with the aim to enable easy scale-up of the catalyst production process. Obtained results on the novel catalysts promise great potential in improving the performance and durability of the DAFC.

AB - Owing to their good mechanical properties, titanium based alloys are used for machine parts and devices that operate in demanding regimes and environmental conditions. Laser shock peening (LSP) is an innovative technique for improvement of the surface and mechanical characteristics of the material. In this paper, LSP is employed for additional improvement of already good characteristics of Ti- alloy. Laser shock peening is performed on alloy surface, with and without protective and transparent layer and obtained microstructure, surface characteristics and mechanical properties are compared. LSP improved the surface topology and microhardness of material, producing overall better results when the Ti-alloy surface was coated by transparent and protective layer.

AB - Preservation of cultural legacy is essential for ensuring its availability for future generations. Long-term indoor storage can sometimes cause the papers to adhere, which can result in the transfer of ink stamps or prints from paper to paper, and subsequently, there emerges the need to remove these types of stains. Laser cleaning emerged as a promising technique for paper surface cleaning. This work presents the laser cleaning of a historical paper dated to the end of the 19th century using the Nd:YAG laser in a nanosecond pulsed regime, at two wavelengths, 532 and 1064 nm, and a semiconductor laser in a continuous regime, at a 552 nm wavelength. The cleaned areas are observed by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and spectrophotometry. The obtained results are discussed in terms of the laser cleaning efficiency characterized by several aspects. The results obtained by green and near-IR laser irradiation in pulsed and continuous regime are compared, showing favorable effects regardless of the laser wavelength. However, in some cases, laser cleaning at 1064 nm wavelength damaged the surface layer of the paper. Cleaning at 532 nm wavelength did not completely remove the ink, and the ink traces were visible under the microscope or spectrometer. The proposed efficient cleaning method for stain, dust, and stamp ink removal from historical papers includes a semiconductor laser at 552 nm, owing to the continuous action of its beam.

AB - Single-pulse microprocessing of a steel surface with a variable pulse width (0.3-12.3 ps) and a wavelength of 515 nm was performed. The morphology of the craters was visualized by a scanning electron microscope and an optical profilometer. The nonmonotonic behavior of ablation thresholds with a minimum at approximate to 1.5 ps, due to achieving the electron-phonon relaxation time of the absorbed energy in the steel was revealed. It is shown that, with an increase in the pulse width in the considered width range, the efficiency of the ablation decreases by a factor of 2, which is explained by the partial transition from the phase explosion to the surface evaporation.

AB - This paper presents an experimental study carried out on Nimonic 263 alloy sheets to determine the optimal combination of laser cutting control factors (assisted gas pressure, beam focus position, laser power, and cutting speed), with respect to multiple characteristics of the cut area. With the aim of designing laser cutting parameters that satisfy the specifications of multiple responses, an advanced multiresponse optimization methodology was used. After the processing of experimental data to develop the process measure using statistical methods, the functional relationship between cutting parameters and the process measure was determined by artificial neural networks (ANNs). Using the trained ANN model, particle swarm optimization (PSO) was employed to find the optimal values of laser cutting parameters. Since the effectiveness of PSO could be affected by its parameter tuning, the settings of PSO algorithm-specific parameters were analyzed in detail. The optimal laser cutting parameters proposed by PSO were implemented in the validation run, showing the superior cut characteristics produced by the optimized parameters and proving the efficacy of the suggested approach in practice. In particular, it is demonstrated that the quality of the Nimonic 263 cut area and the microstructure were significantly improved, as well as the mechanical characteristics.

AB - The dependences of the depth of single-pulse ablation of the steel surface on the energy density of ultrashort laser pulses (0.3-12 ps) with a wavelength of 515 nm have the form different from the usual logarithmic one for linear absorption of radiation. Since the density of states of free conduction electrons in the s band is low, and the d band of strongly bound electrons with a high density of states is located around the Fermi level, these dependences have been approximated within the two-photon absorption model. The two-photon absorption coefficient increases almost linearly with the duration of laser pulses, which indicates the saturation of absorption and allows estimating the corresponding parameters of the electronic subsystem.

AB - In this paper, the influence of parameters of laser processing (drilling, cutting, welding and laser shock peening) on microstructure of superalloy Nimonic 263 are investigated. Drilling and welding process are carried out on the Nd: YAG laser model LS-HTS Mobile P160. When drilling the holes, the parameters of pulse frequency (5 Hz, 7 Hz and 9 Hz) and the pulses duration (1.8 ms to 3.6 ms) are varied. The microstructure is investigated and geometrical and metallurgical characteristics of the holes are determined.Cutting is carried out on the laser BISTRONIC, (2000), BISTAR 3015. The parameters that were varied are as follows: the average laser power, laser velocity, the pressure of the assisting gas and the focus position. Based on the geometrical characteristics of the cuts and surface morphology the optimal parameters are discussed and defined. The laser welded joints of Nimonic 263, in addition to microscopic examination and surface profilometry, were subjected to the destructive testing. During the laser shock peening, the samples were exposed to laser light at a wavelength of 1064 nm and 532 nm, with the number of accumulated pulses 50, 100 and 200. The operating laser was Nd: YAG EKSPLO, SL212P model. Structural analysis of Nimonic 263 was carried out using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and EDS analysis. Microhardness measurements were carried out using the Vickers method under load of 9,81N. Profilometry was performed on a contactless profilometer Zygo Newview 7100.

Profilometry was performed on a contactless profilometer Zygo Newview 7100.",

AB - The anticorrosive properties of single and sandwich layers obtained by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) of the pseudo-binary oxide ZnTa2O6 and zinc meso-tetra(4-pyridyl) porphyrin (ZnTPyP) on steel were investigated. Intercalated thin layers made by PLD technique from the pseudo-binary oxide ZnTa2O6 and zinc meso-tetra(4-pyridyl) porphyrin (ZnTPyP) are expected to self-assemble into ordered nanoparticles and to exhibit uniformity and adherence, offering novel anticorrosive properties. The corrosion tests were performed in solution 0.1 mol l(-1) NaCl. The best corrosion resistance was exhibited by the steel electrode modified with ZnTPyP/ZnTa2O6 deposited layers, i.e. 66.64% inhibition efficiency.

AB - Among numerous existing and developing techniques for the detection of air pollution, laser-based optical methods (LBM) are possibly the most promising ones. Unique sensing capabilities of LBM include high speed of analysis, high selectivity, sensitivity and accuracy, low detection limits, and remote detection. This paper gives a brief review of several laser-based systems for optical sensing of gas-phase chemical agents: laser intra-cavity, photoacoustic and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, and remote sensing based on differential absorption. For each method, a brief description of the principles of operation is given, and its analytical capabilities are outlined.

AB - Porous materials made of commercial tungsten carbide (WC) with the addition of thermally obtained tungsten silicides (WSi2 and W5Si3) were made. The main research's contribution is firstly finding optimal conditions for synthesis tungsten silicides from elementary powders, and lately obtaining porous materials with excellent cavitation resistance. A phase transformation during synthesis of silicides was studied by changing temperature and time of heating. Obtained silicides were added to WC in different mass percentages. Mixtures were spark plasma sintered. Nanoindentation tests were performed on sintered samples, as well as cavitation erosion testing accompanied by measuring of mass changes and the profilometry measurements to scan the surface. Microstructure and morphology were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while porosity percentages based on SEM images were calculated by computer software QWin.
