AB - We report on the possibility to build hierarchically organized three-dimensional (3D) titania spherical particles having high surface-to-volume-ratio, by aerosol processing of nanotubular building blocks. Morphology and crystal structure of titania based spherical assemblies, obtained in the temperature range from 150 to 650 degrees C, were characterized by means of scanning and transmission electron microscopy, x-ray powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Initial shape of 1D building units, nanotubes, was well preserved in the spherical assemblies processed at 150 and 450 degrees C. Processing at 650 degrees C resulted in a collapse of the nanotubular building blocks and formation of the assemblies of irregularly shaped TiO2 nanoparticles. Structural analysis revealed several phase transitions in titania spherical assemblies in course with the temperature increase indicating possibility of in-situ phase composition adjustment during aerosol processing.

AB - Hydrothermal synthetic route for synthesis of Ni2+ doped TiO2 nanocrystals showing room temperature ferromagnetism, using dispersion of titania nanotubes in the presence of Ni2+ ions at different pHs as precursors, is reported. Morphologies of tubular precursors and Ni2+ doped TiO2 nanocrystals were characterized by transmission electron microscopy. Titania nanotubes have outer diameter of about 10 nm while the length varies widely even reaching few hundred nanometers. Ni2+ doped TiO2 nanoparticles synthesized at pH 3 have polygonal shape and dimension of about 20 nm. Transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed presence of mixed shapes (polygonal and rod like) in the sample of Ni2+ doped TiO2 nanoparticles synthesized at pH 5. X-ray diffraction analysis of resultant powder and selected area electron diffraction pattern confirmed the anatase crystal phase of Ni2+ doped TiO2 nanoparticles independently of dopant concentrations (0.09, 0.25, 0.86, 1.48 and 1.80 at%), followed by slight changes of their microstructural parameters. Reflection spectra of Ni2+ doped TiO2 nanoparticles revealed their altered optical properties in comparison to undoped TiO2 nanoparticles. Room temperature ferromagnetic ordering with saturation magnetic moment in the range of 10(-3)-5 x 10(-2) mu B per Ni atom was observed for all measured films made of Ni2+ doped TiO2 nanoparticles.

AB - Nanocrystalline TiO2 films were prepared on glass slides by the dip coating technique using colloidal solutions consisting of 4.5 nm particles as a precursor. Photoirradiation of nanocrystalline TiO2 film modified with alanine that covalently binds to the surface of TiO2 and at the same time chelate silver ions induced formation of metallic silver film. Optical and morphological properties of thin silver films on nanocrystalline TiO2 support were studied by absorption spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. Improvement of photocatalytic performance of nanocrystalline TiO2 films after deposition of silver was observed in degradation reaction of crystal violet. Antimicrobial ability of deposited silver films on nanocrystalline TiO2 support was tested in dark as a function of time against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. The silver films ensured maximum cells reduction of both bacteria, while the fungi reduction reached satisfactory 98.45% after 24 h of contact.

AB - Nanocomposites consisting of self-assembled polyaniline (PANI) nanostructures and titania nanotubes (TiO2-NT) were synthesized by the oxidative polymerization of aniline with ammonium peroxydisulfate in an aqueous dispersion of TiO2-NT (outer diameter similar to 10 nm), without added acid. The influence of initial mole ratio of aniline to TiO2 (80, 20, and 5) on the morphology, electrical conductivity, molecular structure, crystallinity, and magnetic properties of synthesized PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites was studied. Transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction proved that the shape and structure of TiO2-NT in the final nanocomposites were preserved. The shape of PANI nanostructures formed in the nanocomposites was influenced by the initial aniline/TiO2-NT mole ratio. Nanotubes and nanorods are predominant PANI nanostructures in the nanocomposite prepared with the highest aniline/TiO2 mol ratio of 80. The decrease of aniline/TiO2 molar ratio induced more pronounced formation of nanorod network. The electrical conductivity of PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites was in the range (1.3-2.4) x 10(-3) S cm(-1). The nanocomposites exhibit weak ferromagnetic behavior. Approximately order of magnitude lower values of coercive field and remanent magnetization were obtained for nanocomposite samples in comparison to pure PANI.

AB - This study discusses the possibility of in situ generation of Ag nanoparticles on polyester fabric by photoreduction of Ag+ ions with deposited TiO2 nanoparticles in the presence of amino acid alanine and methyl alcohol. The presence of TiO2/Ag nanoparticles on the polyester fiber surface was confirmed by XRD, XPS, and SEM analyses. Such nanocomposite textile material provides excellent antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative bacterium E. coli, Gram-positive bacterium S. aureus, and fungus C. albicans. Maximum microbial reduction was preserved even after ten washing cycles. In spite of satisfactory laundering durability, the release of silver occurred during washing. The leaching of silver was also present when the fabrics were exposed to artificial sweat at pH 5.5 and pH 8.0 for 24 h. In addition to excellent antimicrobial properties, TiO2/Ag nanoparticles imparted maximum UV protection to polyester fabrics.

AB - The surface modification of nanocrystalline TiO2 particles (45 angstrom) with salicylate-type ligands consisting of an extended aromatic ring system, specifically 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid, 3,5-dihydroxy-2-naphthoic acid and 3,7-dihydroxy-2-naphthoic acid, was found to alter the optical properties of nanoparticles in a similar way to salicylic acid. The formation of the inner-sphere charge-transfer (CT) complexes results in a red shift of the semiconductor absorption compared to unmodified nanocrystallites and a reduction in the band gap upon the increase in the electron delocalization when including an additional ring. The investigated ligands have the optimal geometry for binding to surface Ti atoms, resulting in ring coordination complexes of a salicylate-type (binuclear bidentate binding-bridging) thus restoring the six-coordinated octahedral geometry of surface Ti atoms. From both absorption measurements in methanol/water = 90/10 solutions and steady-state quenching measurements of modifier fluorescence upon binding to TiO2 in aqueous solutions, stability constants in the order of 10(3) M-1 have been determined at pH 2 and pH 3. Fluorescence lifetime measurements, in the presence and absence of colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles, indicated that the fluorescence quenching process is primarily static quenching, thus proving the formation of a nonfluorescent CT complex. The binding structures were investigated by using FTIR spectroscopy. Quantum chemical calculations on model systems using density functional theory (DFT) were performed to obtain the vibrational frequencies of charge transfer complexes, and the calculated values were then compared with the experimental data.

Quantum chemical calculations on model systems using density functional theory (DFT) were performed to obtain the vibrational frequencies of charge transfer complexes, and the calculated values were then compared with the experimental data.",

AB - Antibacterial and calorimetric evaluation of cotton fabrics dyed with direct dyes and loaded with Ag nanoparticles This study discusses the relationship between loading of cotton fabric with colloidal Ag nanoparticles and dyeing with direct dyes - C.I. Direct Yellow 86, C.I. Direct Red 79 and C.I. Direct Blue 78. The influence of order of Ag nanoparticles loading and dyeing of cotton fabrics as well as the concentration of applied dye on their antibacterial activity and colour change were studied. Antibacterial activity was tested against gram-negative bacterium E. coli and Gram-positive bacterium S. aureus. Dyed cotton fabrics loaded with Ag nanoparticles exhibited excellent antibacterial properties independently of dye concentration and order of dyeing and loading of Ag nanoparticles. Colour change of cotton fabrics due to presence of Ag nanoparticles is highly influenced by the order of operations, applied dye and dye concentration. The stability of these nanocomposite textile materials was tested in acidic and alkaline artificial sweat. The release of silver occurred independently of the pH value of the sweat.

AB - Spherical, submicronic TiO2 powder particles were prepared in the low temperature process of ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (150 degrees C) by using as a precursor aqueous colloidal solutions consisting of surface modified 45 angstrom TiO2 nanoparticles with dopamine. Detailed structural and morphological characterization of colored submicronic TiO2 spheres was performed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), laser particle size analysis and FTIR techniques. Also, optical characterization of both dopamine-modified TiO2 precursor nanoparticles and submicronic TiO2 powder particles was performed using absorption and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, respectively. A significant decrease of the effective band gap (1.9 eV) in dopamine-modified TiO2 nanoparticles compared to the band gap of bulk material (3.2 eV) was preserved after formation of submicronic TiO2 powder particles in the process of ultrasonic spray pyrolysis under mild experimental conditions. Due to the nanostructured nature, surface-modified assemblage of TiO2 nanoparticles preserved unique ability to absorb light through charge transfer complex by photoexcitation of the ligand-to-TiO2 band, conventionally associated with extremely small TiO2 nanoparticles (d LT 20 nm) whose surface Ti atoms, owing to the large curvature, have penta-coordinate geometry.

AB - We report on a new synthetic route for synthesis of Sm3+ doped TiO2 nanocrystals by shape transformation of hydrothermally treated titania nanotubes in the presence of Sm3+ ions. Shape and size of Sm3+ doped TiO2 nanocrystals were characterized by transmission electron microscopy. An average size of polyhedral nanocrystals mainly of square/rectangular shape varied between 12 and 14 nm. X-ray diffraction analysis of resultant powder revealed the anatase crystal phase of Sm3+ doped TiO2 nanocrystals independently of the amount of dopant. Room-temperature photoluminescence observed in the orange-red spectral region, which is associated with (4)G(5/2)-> H-6(J) (J=5/2, 7/2 and 9/2) f-f transitions of the Sm3+ in the 4f(5) configuration after band-to-band excitation, confirmed energy transfer in Sm3+ doped TiO2 nanocrystals.

AB - Prismatic and plate-like silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were synthesized according to the seed-mediated method. These particles were used as precursors for preparation of homogenous, transparent and colored Ag/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanocomposite films with different concentrations of Ag by solution-casting technique. Optical and structural characterization of these nanocomposites includes UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), FTIR spectroscopy and SEM measurements. Further, the effect of embedded nanoparticles on the thermal properties of the PVA matrix was studied. The value of the glass transition temperature of polymer is found to increase after embedding Ag NPs. Comparison of thermal properties of pure PVA and nanocomposite films showed that the thermo-oxidative stability of polymer slightly increased in the presence of Ag NPs. Furthermore, the effect of the Ag NPs on the crystallinity of polymer was also observed.

Submicronic, soft and grained spherical TiO2 particles (d = 370-500 nm) comprising clustered nanocrystals ( LT 10 nm) were obtained at low processing temperature, while particle densification, intensive growth of the clustered primary units and anatase-to-rutile transformation (similar to 30 wt%) were observed at the higher temperatures. Detailed structural and morphological characterisation were performed by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning and field emission electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and laser particle size analysis. Moreover, the surface modification of TiO2 particles through the formation of charge-transfer (CT) complex was achieved with different ligands: ascorbic acid, dopamine, catechol, 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene, and anthrarobin. Optical properties of the surface-modified TiO2 particles were studied by using diffuse reflection spectroscopy. The binding structure between the surface titanium atoms and different ligands was determined by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The formation of CT complexes induced significant red shift of optical absorption in comparison to unmodified TiO2 particles.

AB - Poly(vinyl alcohol)-based nanocomposites consisting of shaped TiO2 nanocrystals (nanoparticles, nanotubes or nanorods) were synthesized by direct blending of the polymer and a solution of titania nanocrystals or powder. In order to elucidate the influence of the shape of the titania nanocrystals on thermal stability of the polymer matrix and particles interaction with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) chains, structural and thermal characterizations of PVA/TiO2 nanocomposites were performed. Faceted nanoparticles increased the thermal stability of the PVA matrix. Titania nanotubes and nanorods did not show any stabilizing effect on the polymer matrix under an argon atmosphere. The thermo-oxidative degradation temperature of PVA increased with addition of faceted TiO2 nanoparticles. The thermo-oxidative stability of the PVA matrix was affected more by the presence of titania nanotubes and nanorods in comparison with its thermal stability under an inert atmosphere. The degree crystallinity (X-c=32 %) of the PVA matrix slightly decreased in the presence of the faceted TiO2 nanoparticles in nanocomposite samples.

abstract = "Poly(vinyl alcohol)-based nanocomposites consisting of shaped TiO2 nanocrystals (nanoparticles, nanotubes or nanorods) were synthesized by direct blending of the polymer and a solution of titania nanocrystals or powder. The degree crystallinity (X-c=32 %) of the PVA matrix slightly decreased in the presence of the faceted TiO2 nanoparticles in nanocomposite samples.",

AB - This study compares the effect of colloidal silver nanoparticles and the commercial RUCO-BAC AGP agent with silver chloride as the active component on the antibacterial activity of dyed cotton fabrics. Cotton fabrics were dyed with vat dyes Bezanthren Olive T and Bezanthren Grey FFB. The antibacterial activities of the silver-loaded dyed cotton fabrics were tested against the Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus and the Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli. Unlike RUCO-BAC AGP, the synthesized silver nanoparticles deposited onto the dyed cotton fabrics provided maximum bacteria reduction, independent of the applied dye. The stability of the modified cotton fabrics was analyzed in artificial sweat at pH 5.5 and 8.0. Approximately the same amount of silver was released from the differently modified cotton fabrics in artificial sweat. Larger amounts of silver were released in the sweat at pH 8.0.

AB - Novel ferromagnetic semiconducting polyaniline PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites were synthesized by the oxidative polymerization of aniline with ammonium peroxydisulfate in an aqueous medium, in the presence of colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles (d similar to 4.5 nm), without added acid. The morphological, magnetic, structural, and optical properties of the PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites prepared at initial aniline/TiO2 mole ratios 80, 40, and 20 were studied by scanning electron microscopy, superconducting quantum interference device, X-ray powder diffraction, FTIR, Raman, and UV-Vis spectroscopies. The emeraldine salt form of linear PANI chains as well as the presence of phenazine units, branched PANI chains, and anatase crystalline structure of TiO2 in PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites was confirmed by FTIR and Raman spectroscopies. The electrical conductivity of synthesized composites was similar to 10-3 S cm-1. The room temperature ferromagnetic response with coercive field of Hc similar to 300 Oe and the remanent magnetization of Mr similar to 4.35 x 10-4 emu/g was detected in all investigated PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites. AB - We report on a new approach to the synthesis of Eu3+ doped TiO2 nanocrystals and prolate nanospheroids. They were synthesized by shape transformation of hydrothermally treated titania nanotubes at different pH and in the presence of Eu3+ ions. The use of nanotubes as a precursor to the synthesis of Eu3+ doped TiO2 nanocrystals and prolate nanospheroids opens the possibility of overcoming the problems related to molecular precursors. The shapes and sizes of the nanotubes, Eu3+ doped TiO2 nanocrystals and prolate nanospheroids were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique. Crystal structures of the resultant powders were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The percentage ratio of Eu3+ to Ti4+ ions in doped nanocrystals was determined using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy. The optical characterization was done by using fluorescence and ultraviolet-visible reflection spectroscopies. An average size of faceted Eu3+ doped TiO2 nanocrystals was 13 nm. The lateral dimensions of Eu3+ doped TiO2 prolate nanospheroids varied from 14 to 20 nm, while the length varied from 40 to 80 nm, depending on precursor concentrations. The XRD patterns revealed the homogeneous anatase crystal phase of Eu3+ doped TiO2 nanocrystals and prolate nanospheroids independently of the amount of dopant. A postsynthetic treatment (filtration or dialysis) was applied on the dispersions of the doped nanoparticles in order to study the influence of the dopant position on photoluminescence (PL) spectra. In the red spectral region, room temperature PL signals associated with D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J = 1-4) transitions of Eu3+ were observed in all samples. The increased contribution of dopants from the interior region of dialyzed nanocrystals to photoluminescence was confirmed by the increase of R value.

AB - This study discusses the possibility of using a corona discharge at atmospheric pressure and air RF plasma at low pressure for the cotton fibre activation prior to deposition of colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles in order to enhance antibacterial, UV protective and self-cleaning properties. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis confirmed the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles on the surface of cotton fibres. XPS elemental mapping indicated that TiO2 nanoparticles were more evenly distributed across the surface of untreated and corona pre-treated cotton fabrics in comparison with RF plasma pre-treated fabric. Atomic absorption spectroscopy measurements revealed that the equivalent total content of TiO2 in the cotton fabrics pre-treated by corona and RF plasma was 31% higher than in the fabric that did not undergo any treatment prior to loading of TiO2 nanoparticles. In order to achieve maximum bacteria (Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli) reduction, untreated cotton fabric had to be loaded with colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles twice, but only once following corona or RF plasma pre-treatment. Deposition of TiO2 nanoparticles onto cotton fabrics provided maximum UV protective rating of 50+. Extraordinary photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanoparticles deposited onto cotton fabrics was proved by self-cleaning of blueberry juice stains and photodegradation of methylene blue in aqueous solution under UV illumination.

AB - In this study the possibility of tailoring the textile nanocomposite materials based on the polyester fabric and TiO2 nanoparticles that can simultaneously provide desirable level of antibacterial activity, UV protection, and self-cleaning effects with long-term durability was investigated. To enhance the binding efficiency of colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles, the surface of polyester fabrics was activated by low-pressure RF air plasma, and corona discharge at atmospheric pressure. Obtained functionalized textile materials provided maximum antibacterial efficiency against gram-negative bacterium E. coli. AB - The objective of this study was to highlight the potential application of the corona discharge at atmospheric pressure for the surface activation of polyester (PES) fabrics in order to improve the binding efficiency of colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles. The obtained nanocomposite textile materials provide desirable level of UV protection, self-cleaning properties, and photodegradation activity. The measured UV protection factor (UPF) of fabrics corresponds to UPF rating of 50+, designating the maximum UV protection. Additionally, the total photodegradation of methylene blue in aqueous solution was achieved after 24 hr of UV illumination and this capability was preserved and even improved after four repeated cycles. The results showed that the corona treated PES fabrics loaded with TiO2 nanoparticles had considerably enhanced the overall efficiency compared to PES fabrics loaded only with TiO2 nanoparticles.

AB - This study is aimed to highlight the possibility of engineering the multifunctional textile nanocomposite material based on the polyester (PES) fabric modified with colloidal Ag and TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs). The effects of concentration of NPs as well as the order of Ag and TiO2 NPs loading on antimicrobial, UV protective, and photocatalytic properties of PES fabrics were examined. The antimicrobial activity of differently modified PES fabrics was tested against Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli, Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, and fungus Candida albicans. The concentration of Ag colloid and the order of Ag and TiO2 NPs loading considerably affected the antimicrobial efficiency of PES fabrics. The fabrics provided maximum UV protection upon surface modification with Ag and TiO2 NPs. Ag NPs enhanced Ag NPs enhanced the photodegradation activity of TiO2 NPs and total photodegradation of methylene blue was achieved after 24 hr of UV illumination.

AB - The potential application of low-temperature radio frequency (RF) plasma for fiber surface activation in order to enhance the binding efficiency of colloidal silver nanoparticles onto the polyester fabrics and improve the stability of antibacterial effects was studied. Antibacterial activity and laundering durability were tested against gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli and gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. Plasma treatment positively affected the loading of silver nanoparticles as well as antibacterial activity and laundering durability of these textile nanocomposite materials. In spite of good laundering durability after five washing cycles, it was found that silver leached from the fabric into the bath during washing. Released silver from the washing effluent was efficiently removed by recycled wool-based nonwoven sorbent modified with hydrogen peroxide and biopolymer alginate.

AB - The potentials of low-pressure capacitively coupled RF oxygen and argon plasmas for the activation of polyester fibers surface that can enhance the deposition of colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles were discussed. SEM and XPS analysis confirmed the plasma-induced morphological and chemical changes on the surface of polyester fibers. Oxygen and argon plasma pretreated polyester fabrics loaded with TiO2 nanoparticles provided maximum reduction of Gram-negative bacteria E. coli and UV blocking. The self-cleaning effects tested on blueberry juice stains and photodegradation of methylene blue in aqueous solution proved excellent photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanoparticles deposited onto fiber surface. Although both plasmas significantly contributed to overall improvement of properties of such nanocomposite textile material, oxygen plasma treatment, in particular, enhanced the deposition of colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles and thus ensured superior effects.

AB - Surface modification of nanocrystalline TiO2 particles (45 ) with bidentate benzene derivatives (catechol, pyrogallol, and gallic acid) was found to alter optical properties of nanoparticles. The formation of the inner-sphere charge-transfer complexes results in a red shift of the semiconductor absorption compared to unmodified nanocrystallites. The binding structures were investigated by using FTIR spectroscopy. The investigated ligands have the optimal geometry for chelating surface Ti atoms, resulting in ring coordination complexes (catecholate type of binuclear bidentate binding-bridging) thus restoring in six-coordinated octahedral geometry of surface Ti atoms. From the Benesi-Hildebrand plot, the stability constants at pH 2 of the order 10(3) M-1 have been determined.

AB - Self-assembled polyaniline (PANI) nanotubes, accompanied with nanoribbons, were synthesized by the oxidative polymerization of aniline with ammonium peroxydisulfate in an aqueous medium, in the presence of colloidal titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles of 4.5 nm size, without added acid. The morphology, structure, and physicochemical properties of the PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites. prepared at various initial aniline/TiO2 mole ratios, were studied by scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopies, FTIR, Raman and inductively coupled plasma optical emission (ICP-OES) spectroscopies, elemental analysis, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), conductivity measurements, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The electrical conductivity of PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites increases in the range 3.8 x 10(-4) to 1.1 x 10(-3) S cm(-1) by increasing aniline/TiO2 mole ratio from 1 to 10. The morphology of PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites significantly depends on the initial aniline/TiO2 mole ratio. In the morphology of the nanocomposite synthesized using aniline/TiO2 mole ratio 10, nanotubes accompanied with nanosheets prevail. The nanocomposite synthesized at aniline/TiO2 mole ratio 5 consists of the network of nanotubes (an outer diameter 30-40 nm, an inner diameter 4-7 nm) and nanorods (diameter 50-90 nm), accompanied with nanoribbons (a thickness, width, and length in the range of 50-70 nm, 160-350 nm, and similar to 1-3 mu m, respectively). The PANI/TiO2 nanocomposite synthesized at aniline/TiO2 mole ratio 2 contains polyhedral submicrometre particles accompanied with nanotubes, while the nanocomposite prepared at aniline/TiO2 mole ratio 1 consists of agglomerated nanofibers, submicrometre and nanoparticles. The presence of emeraldine salt form of PANI, linear and branched PANI chains, and phenazine units in PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites was proved by FTIR and Raman spectroscopies. The improved thermal stability of PANI matrix in all PANI/TiO2 nanocomposites was observed.

AB - This study was aimed to investigate the possibility of engineering the multifunctional textile nanocomposite material based on the polyester fabric modified with natural polysaccharide alginate and colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles. The multifunctionality of such nanocomposite material was evaluated by analyzing its UV protection efficiency, antibacterial and photocatalytic activity. The level of UV protection was verified by the UV protection factor (UPF) of polyester fabrics. Antibacterial activity of modified polyester fabrics was tested against Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanoparticles deposited on the polyester fabrics was followed by degradation of methylene blue as a model compound in aqueous solution. Modified polyester fabrics exhibited outstanding antibacterial activity and UV protection efficiency even after five washing cycles, indicating the excellent laundering durability. The total photodegradation of methylene blue was reached after 24 h of UV illumination and this ability was preserved and even enhanced after two consecutive cycles.

abstract = "This study was aimed to investigate the possibility of engineering the multifunctional textile nanocomposite material based on the polyester fabric modified with natural polysaccharide alginate and colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles. The total photodegradation of methylene blue was reached after 24 h of UV illumination and this ability was preserved and even enhanced after two consecutive cycles.",

AB - The aim of this study was to examine the influence of dyeing on antibacterial efficiency of corona activated polyamide and polyester fabrics loaded with colloidal Ag nanoparticles as well as the influence of the presence of Ag nanoparticles on the color change of dyed fabrics. C.I. Acid Green 25 and C.I. Disperse Blue 3 were used for dyeing of polyamide fabrics and C.I. disperse violet 8 for polyester fabrics. The color change of polyamide fabrics depends on the dye type, which was generally lower compared to polyester fabrics. Antibacterial efficiency of Ag loaded fabrics was tested against Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli. Corona activated polyester and polyamide fabrics showed excellent antibacterial efficiency independently of order of dyeing and Ag loading. The morphology of fibers loaded with Ag nanoparticles was assessed by SEM and atomic absorption spectroscopy for elemental analysis.
