AB - In recent years, coordination polymers (CPs) have emerged as versatile scaffolding materials built from various metal ions and organic ligands, and these materials are highly investigated for their use in numerous applications. In particular, coordination polymers including lanthanide ions (Ln) are very promising because these ions transfer some interesting luminescence features to the frameworks, such as sharp emission, long lifetimes, large Stokes’ shift and high color purity. Although much research focusses on carboxylate-type ligands for the preparation of coordination polymers owing to their ability to form porous structures, organophosphonates appear to be promising ligands as well. In fact they display higher coordination versatility and they are able to bridge a large number of metal cations enhancing the metal density and allowing for the introduction of multiple functionalities in the heterometallic structures. Moreover, thanks to the proton exchange properties of the phosphonate groups, these materials can display remarkable proton conduction properties. In the current review, lanthanide phosphonates assembling 1-, 2- and 3-dimensional (D) coordination polymers are described, and their value in different applications will be outlined. From the literature survey, it emerges that 1D structures with an extended hydrogen bonding network were the most promising materials for proton conduction, while 2D structures were mainly investigated for their luminescent and magnetic properties. In many examples the luminescence of 3D lanthanide coordination polymers could be changed by incorporating small molecules or metal ions, which opens up new possibilities for their use as straightforward sensor materials.

AB - The organic pigments offer promising opportunities for developing new sustainable electrode materials for lithium batteries. Some of them have been identified as cathode material with very encouraging reversible lithium ion storage characteristics. One of them is a naturally occurring purpurin extracted from the Madder plant (Rubia tinctorum) for which we confirmed this good electrochemical behavior by cyclic voltammetry. One of the strategies towards obtaining materials with even better characteristics is a structural modification of already existing pigments. Building a theoretical model that could predict the redox properties of these new compounds can be very useful towards achieving that goal. In order to build a 3D QSAR (quantitative structure–activity relationship) model for material redox potential prediction, 9 organic pigments with known redox potentials were extracted from the literature. Based on molecular interaction field (MIF) probes we calculated standard GRIND (grid-independent) descriptors and constructed following principal PLS (partial least squares) model. By validation with the literature data, but also with the obtained experimental data for purpurin, this model proved very reliable in predicting the redox potential. A comparison was also made with the machine learning model that was formed in parallel.

AB - In this work, synthesized 12-tungstenphosphoric acid (H3PW12O40 × nH2O; PWA) was further ionically exchanged with Fe3+ ions, which led to the formation of the 12-tungstophosporic acid iron salt, (FePW12O40 × nH2O; Fe-PWA). Fe-PWA was then subjected to thermal analysis (TGA/DTA), determining the phase transition temperature of 576 °C from Fe-PWA to its corresponding phosphate tungsten bronze doped with iron, Fe-PWB. Using the X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning electron microscopy with an energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) method, the obtained Fe-PWA and Fe-PWB were additionally characterized, and compared. Due to channels and cavities in their structures, Fe-PWA and Fe-PWB were next examined as electrode materials for aqueous rechargeable batteries. Electrochemical measurements were done in aqueous solutions of 6 M LiNO3 by cyclic voltammetry. Fe-PWA and Fe-PWB exhibit different redox processes, which are discussed thoroughly in this work. Electrochemical results are showing that within the Fe-PWA structure, more Li+ ions can be intercalated in the first discharge cycle, but consecutive cycling leads to a fast capacity fade. While the Fe-PWB redox process was stable during cycling, its specific capacity is limited by the material's poor electrical conductivity. Improvements in Fe-PWB conductivity must be addressed in future studies in order to boost material’s electrochemical performance.

AB - Cobalt molybdate is of importantce for the development of mobile telecommunication systems, such as mobile phones and high-quality microwave dielectric ceramics for high resonant frequency selectivity in microwave devices. Due to their special catalytic properties, cobalt molybdates have been used as catalysts in many chemical and petrochemical processes. The CoMoO4 nanoparticles ware synthetized in a simple, quick, and inexpensive way, by using a glycine nitrate procedure (GNP), with and without calcination at 450 °C [1], and investigated by applying the Briggs-Rauscher oscillatory reaction method [2]. The complex oscillatory BR reaction is sensitive to different insoluble analyte addition [3]. This feature of BR oscillatory reaction is used to investigate effect of different masses of GNP synthetized (with and without calcination at 450 °C) CoMoO4 samples on oscillatory dynamics. These two samples give the complete different effects in BR reaction. Obtained results strongly suggest that BR oscillatory reaction could be used for distinguishing these two samples, opening new direction in the investigation of ceramics materials.

AB - This mini review discusses the phenomenon of thermophoresis, also known as the thermophoretic effect. Thermophoreticeffect arises from the combination of a temperature gradient and particles of very small dimensions, on the order of magnitudeof the mean free path of the molecules of the surrounding gas. Despite being a little-known effect, it is critical to many physicaland chemical processes and for characterising the properties of nanostructured materials that could be used in industry forsensing applications. A description and definition of otherwise very similar thermophoresis terms is provided, as well as a briefoverview of the literature on this topic, with a focus on research in the twenty-first century

AB - Due to Li-ion batteries having become the main power source of most portable electronic devices, their waste has also become a significant environmental problem. To find batteries that would be environmentally friendly, this work examines Zn-ion batteries in an aqueous solution of ZnCl2. The ZnMnO4 was synthesized by glycine nitrate combustion of Zn(NO3)2, Mn(NO3)2 and glycine as a chelating agent [1]. The structure of the material obtained was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) showing a spinel structure; the morphology was characterized by scanningelectron microscopy (SEM) showing that nano-particles were obtained. The electrochemical characterization was done by cyclic voltammetry in an aqueous solution of ZnCl2. The mixture pasted on the glossy carbon electrode was prepared by mixing the cathode material, graphite and polyvinyl diene difluoride (PVDF) in a ratio 85:10:5 [2]. Due to the low discharge capacity obtained of ~14 mAh g-1 for 5 mV s-1 , further examination was done by adding 1 ml of 1M Mn(NO3)2 into 10ml of a saturated aqueous solution of ZnCl2. After adding the Mn(NO3)2 , the dischargecapacity increased from ~14 mAh g-1 to ~65 mAh g-1 at the same polarization rate, making this additive a promising one for aqueous Zn-ion batteries. Further investigation needs to be directed to adding the same additive in larger amounts compared to 1ml to the same volume of the electrolyte. The results obtained suggest the aqueous Zn-ion battery described in this work to be a potentially promising “green” battery that may replace harmful commercial organic Li-ion batteries.

AB - In this paper, 12-tungstenphosphoric acid (PWA) was synthesized in combination with FeCl3 at room temperature (25 oC). At such manner, Fe3+ ion exchange gave new 12-tungstenphosphoric salt of the transition metal iron (FePW12O40×nH2O; Fe-PWA). Thermal analysis determined the temperature of about 596 oC of the phase transition, i.e., the temperature at which the structure of the Kegin anion is disturbed. Therefore, it was chosen temperature above the breakdown of the Kegin anion of 650 oC, and which is required to obtain phosphate tungsten bronzes (PWB) doped with iron (Fe-PWB). The sample was kept in the oven for 10 minutes. Such obtained new Fe-PWB doped bronze was further investigated by the X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and Rietveld methods. The XRPD patterns of Fe-PWA and Fe-PWB were taken in the 3-90o 2θ angle range, and clearly reveal crystallographic and structural differences between these two phases. Determined unit-cell parameters of Fe-PWB obtained by the Rietveld method in the monoclinic crystallographic system are as following: a0 = 7.53(2) Å; b0 = 7.51(1) Å; c0 = 7.64(1) Å; β0 = 89.7(2)o; and V0 = 431(2) Å3. These unit-cell parameters were compared with PWB, as well as other previously doped bronzes (Li-PWB and Ca-PWB). It can be concluded that inserting of the Fe3+ ion into the PWB’s structure was undoubtedly proven, and have the most influence to the axis a0 (i.e., it significantly increased), angle β0 (i.e., it significantly decreased), and volume V0 (i.e., it significantly increased). On the other hand, influence to the axis c0 is quite smaller (i.e., it slightly decreased), whereas influence to the axis b0 is minor. Such behavior is also very different in comparison to the Li-PWB and Ca-PWB.

AB - The following article describes new research about the design, construction and installation of the new prototype of a vacuum dryer with an ejector system. Moreover, the testing of this new prototype involved comparing the qualities of fruit dried in a vacuum drier with an ejector system to fruit dried in a convectional vacuum drier. The data obtained were then analyzed and presented. Due to their economic relevance and highly valuable nutritional value and sensory properties, sour cherries and apricots have been chosen to be the subjects for the testing. The most appropriate quality indicators for analyzing were moisture content, aw value, share and penetration force, total phenol, flavonoid and anthocyanin content and antioxidant activity (FRAP, DPPH and ABTS test). The main results of this study were achieved by designing, constructing, installing and testing the usage of the innovative prototype of a vacuum dryer with an ejector system in the laboratory of the Technology of fruit and vegetable products of the Faculty of Technology Novi Sad, University of Novi Sad. Based on our analyses of the obtained data, it was concluded that vacuum dryer with an ejector system are similar to vacuum dryer with a vacuum pump in terms of all tested physical, chemical and biological properties of dried samples. We observed similarities in some of the most important parameters, including product safety and quality, such as the aw value and the total phenol content, respectively. For example, in dried sour cherry, the aw values ranged from 0.250 to 0.521 with the vacuum pump and from 0.232 to 0.417 with the ejector system; the total phenol content ranged from 2322 to 2765 mg GAE/100 g DW with the vacuum pump and from 2327 to 2617 mg GAE/100 g DW with the ejector system. In dried apricot, the aw ranged from 0.176 to 0.405 with the vacuum pump and from 0.166 to 0.313 with the ejector system; total phenol content ranged from 392 to 439 mg GAE/100 g DW with the vacuum pump and from 378 to 428 mg GAE/100 g DW with the ejector system.

AB - For most natural organisms, the physical, chemical and biological aspects of fluorescence emission are poorly understood. For example, to the best of our knowledge, fluorescence from the transparent wings of any of the 3000 known species of cicadas has never been reported in the literature. These wings are known to exhibit anti-reflective properties arising from quasi-periodic arrays of nipples. Our study, using linear and nonlinear optical techniques, including spectrofluorimetry, two-photon fluorescence spectroscopy and Second Harmonic Gener-ation (SHG), reveals the fluorescence properties in the wings the grey and the common cicadas (Cicada orni and Lyristes (Tibicen) plebejus, respectively), as well as the broad-bordered bee hawk-moth (Hemaris fuciformis). The study suggests that fluorescence would be more widespread in transparent insect wings than what was previously believed. Comparing this result to the fluorescence emission from the wings of the Bornean damselfly (Vestalis amabilis), we inferred that this emission probably arises from resilin, a protein reported to enhance wing flexi-bility. Moreover, the nonlinear optical investigation of the insects' wings provided further insight into wing structure, indicating that multiphoton techniques add valuable information for the analysis of insect in-teguments. The strong SHG signal detected from the wing veins implies that these veins are materially organised in a non-centrosymmetric and hence non-random fashion.

AB - In this experimental study, picosecond laser treatment was performed on a nickel-based superalloy Nimonic 263, aiming to investigate the surface effects induced by irradiation in different atmospheric conditions and, concerning changes in surface composition, regarding the possibility for improvement of its functionality. Besides the varying laser parameters, such as a number of pulses and pulse energy, environmental conditions are also varied. All surface modifications were carried out in standard laboratory conditions and a nitrogen- and argon-rich atmosphere. The resulting topography effects depend on the specific laser treatment and could be categorized as increased roughness, crater formation, and formation of the laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS). Changes in the chemical surface composition are distinguished as the potential formation of the protective oxides/nitrides on the sample surface. Numerous characterization techniques analyse the resulting effects on the topography and surface parameters. The multi-response parametric optimization of the picosecond laser process was performed using an advanced statistical method based on Taguchi's robust parameter design. Finally, the optimal parameter conditions for Nimonic 263 modification are suggested.

AB - Stinging nettle (SN) is an extraordinary plant from the Urticaceae botanical family. It is well-known and widely used in food and folk medicine to treat different disorders and diseases. This article aimed to study the chemical composition of SN leaves extracts, i.e., polyphenolic compounds and vitamins B and C, because many studies ascribed high biological potency to these compounds and their significance in the human diet. Besides the chemical profile, the thermal properties of the extracts were studied. The results confirmed presence of many polyphenolic compounds and vitamins B and C. It also showed that the chemical profile closely correlated with the applied extraction technique. The thermal analysis showed that analyzed samples were thermally stable up to about 160 degrees C. Thermal degradation of samples UAE, MAE, and MAC took place in four steps, and sample SE in three steps. Altogether, results confirmed the presence of health-beneficial compounds in stinging nettle leaves and indicated the possible application of its extract in pharmaceutical and food industries as both a medicinal and food additive.

AB - Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica L.) is one fantastic plant widely used in folk medicine, pharmacy, cosmetics, and food. This plant's popularity may be explained by its chemical composition, containing a wide range of compounds significant for human health and diet. This study aimed to investigate extracts of exhausted stinging nettle leaves after supercritical fluid extraction obtained using ultrasound and microwave techniques. Extracts were analyzed to obtain insight into the chemical composition and biological activity. These extracts were shown to be more potent than those of previously untreated leaves. The principal component analysis was applied as a pattern recognition tool to visualize the antioxidant capacity and cytotoxic activity of extract obtained from exhausted stinging nettle leaves. An artificial neural network model is presented for the prediction of the antioxidant activity of samples according to polyphenolic profile data, showing a suitable anticipation property (the r(2) value during the training cycle for output variables was 0.999).

AB - One of the essential factors for the selection of the drying process is energy consumption. This study intended to optimize the drying treatment of capers using convection (CD), refractive window (RWD), and vacuum drying (VD) combined with ultrasonic pretreatment by a comparative approach among artificial neural networks (ANN) and response surface methodology (RSM) focusing on the specific energy consumption (SEC). For this purpose, the effects of drying temperature (50, 60, 70 degrees C), ultrasonication time (0, 20, 40 min), and drying method (RWD, CD, VD) on the SEC value (MJ/g) were tested using a face-centered central composite design (FCCD). RSM (R-2: 0.938) determined the optimum drying-temperature-ultrasonication-time values that minimize SEC as; 50 degrees C-35.5 min, 70 degrees C-40 min and 70 degrees C-24 min for RWD, CD and VD, respectively. The conduct of the ANN model is evidenced by the correlation coefficient for training (0.976), testing (0.971) and validation (0.972), which shows the high suitability of the model for optimising specific energy consumption (SEC).

AB - Simple Summary The green mold disease caused by the pathogenic fungi Trichoderma spp. is the most harmful disease for edible mushroom production. This disease's harmful effect is due to the belated detection of the green mold disease, which occurs when the damage to the yield is irreversible. Severe epidemics of green mold started during the 1980s and 1990s in Europe and America and triggered the development of molecular approaches for the monitoring and detection of Trichoderma. The most promising molecular tools are nucleic acid (NA)-based methods. In this review, we discuss the currently most-used molecular methods for green mold detection and introduce an NA-based isothermal amplification methodology suitable for the development of point-of-need (PON) devices for field applications in detecting this disease. Due to the evident aggressive nature of green mold and the consequently huge economic damage it causes for producers of edible mushrooms, there is an urgent need for prevention and infection control measures, which should be based on the early detection of various Trichoderma spp. as green mold causative agents. The most promising current diagnostic tools are based on molecular methods, although additional optimization for real-time, in-field detection is still required. In the first part of this review, we briefly discuss cultivation-based methods and continue with the secondary metabolite-based methods. Furthermore, we present an overview of the commonly used molecular methods for Trichoderma species/strain detection. Additionally, we also comment on the potential of genomic approaches for green mold detection. In the last part, we discuss fast screening molecular methods for the early detection of Trichoderma infestation with the potential for in-field, point-of-need (PON) application, focusing on isothermal amplification methods. Finally, current challenges and future perspectives in Trichoderma diagnostics are summarized in the conclusions.

AB - This work aimed to determine the influence of biopolymer coatings based on pumpkin oil cake, with and without the addition of Mentha piperita essential oil, on the quality and shelf-life of the Afus Ali variety of grapes, stored at room temperature and in the refrigerator. Furthermore, a 10% (w/w) aqueous solution of composite pumpkin oil cake (PuOC) with the addition of 30% glycerol was prepared at 60 degrees C and pH 10. The active biopolymer coating was prepared similarly by adding 1% (v/v) Mentha piperita essential oil. The quality of packed grapes was tested by determining the dry matter content, total sugar content, total acidity, alcohol content, total phenolic compounds content, and total flavonoid content, as well as by determining the antioxidant activity, through the application of the DPPH, FRAP and ABTS tests. Additionally, microbiological parameters were investigated: total aerobic microbial count, yeasts, and molds. The obtained results proved that in all tested samples, over a certain period of time, the content of dry matter, content of phenolic and flavonoids substances and sugar content decreased as a consequence of the spoilage of grapes, that is, the consumption of sugar for the production of alcohol, which consequently leads to the total acidity increasing. The application of lower storage temperatures and active coating (with Mentha piperita essential oil) had a positive effect on all inevitable reactions. Grapes' antioxidant potential may be enhanced or maintained by applying PuOC coating with or without Mentha piperita essential oil, which is best observed in the case of the DPPH test. The uncoated sample stored at room temperature had the largest decrease in DPPH values during storage, with changes ranging from 2.119 mg/g to 1.471 mu mol mg/g. The samples, coated with PuOC and PuOC with the addition of essential oil, had uniform DPPH values throughout the entire storage period. Additionally, regarding phenolic content, at the end of storage period the highest phenolic content was observed in samples with active coating stored at room temperature (734.746 +/- 2.462) and at refrigerator temperature (680.827 +/- 0.448) compared with untreated samples and with samples with plain PuOC coating. The presence of active essential oil in the applied coating significantly affected the microbiological profile of grapes during the storage period. Besides the positive impact of the applied lower storage temperature, the effectiveness of the applied active packaging is even greater (microbiological results were in the order of PuOC+essential oil LT PuOC LT Control). The developed artificial neural networks were found to be adequate for modeling the microbiological profile, antioxidant activity, phenolic and flavonoid content.

AB - This study evaluated surface wear and resistance to fracture of reciprocating and novel rotary instruments after use in curved canals. Twenty new instruments (n = 5/each group): Reciproc Blue, WaveOne Gold, XP-endo Shaper (XPS) and TruNatomy were used twice for the instrumentation of simulated curved canals in plastic blocks. The instrumentation was performed according to the manufacturer's instructions at body temperature. Surface roughness was evaluated, using a profilometer, before instrumentation and twice after the instrumentation. Instruments were, then, subjected to a cyclic fatigue test to evaluate the time to failure. Differences were assessed using ANOVA and post hoc tests (alpha = 0.05). The XPS instruments showed significantly higher values of roughness compared with TruNatomy at every stage, especially after the second use (p LT 0.008). Reciprocating instruments showed superior cyclic fatigue resistance compared with novel rotary instruments (p LT 0.05). TruNatomy showed minimal surface roughness, and XPS exhibited significantly higher surface roughness.

AB - The demand for ready-to-use functional foods is high, which encourages manufacturers to develop new, nutritionally valuable products. As an excellent source of biologically active compounds, beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) is considered to have highly beneficial effects on health. This research aimed to evaluate the impact of replacing spelt flour (SF) with 15%, 20% and 25% beetroot powder (BP). The physicochemical and functional properties of biscuits baked at different temperatures (150 and 170 degrees C) were followed at the beginning, and after 3 and 6 months of storage as standard conditions. Moisture content and water activity (aw) gave insight into the biscuits' shelf life. The value of aw from 0.35 to 0.56 indicated appropriate storability. Dietary fiber content in fresh biscuits ranged from 6.1% to 7.6%, protein from 9.2% to 8.9% and sugar from 30.6% to 35.9%. The content of betalain, total polyphenols and flavonoids, and antioxidant activity (DPPH, FRAP) increased with beetroot powder content incorporated. A slight decrease of all the mentioned parameters during the storage indicated satisfied retention of bioactive molecules. The content of prevalent phenolic compounds gallic and protocatechuic acid, identified by HPLC, decreased from 22.2-32.0 and 21.1-24.9 in fresh biscuits to 18.3-23.4 and 17.3-20.3 mg/100 g upon six months of storage, respectively. An increase of the L* and a* and a decrease of the b* coordinate values, compared with the control sample without beetroot values, was noticed as well as the expected level of their change during the storage. The obtained results indicated that biscuits enriched with beetroot powder showed a significantly improved functional, nutritional and antioxidant potential during storage.

AB - Antioxidants in fruit and vegetable juices have become increasingly popular because of their potential health benefits. Nowadays, juice mixes made from berries present frequent consumer choices, due to their nutritive value and high content of bioactive compounds. Commercial fruit and vegetable juices available in Serbian markets (n = 32) were analyzed for the physicochemical properties, chemical composition, and antioxidant activity. Relative antioxidant capacity index was used for the ranking of the juices according to antioxidant capacity, while antioxidant effectiveness of phenolic compounds contained in juice samples was investigated depending on phenolic antioxidant coefficients. Principal component analysis was applied to study the data structure. In addition, a multi-layer perceptron model was used for modeling an artificial neural network model (ANN) for prediction antioxidant activity (DPPH, reducing power, and ABTS) based on total phenolic, total pigments, and vitamin C content. The obtained ANN showed good prediction capabilities (the r(2) values during training cycle for output variables were 0.942). Phenolic, pigments, and vitamin C contents showed a positive correlation with the investigated antioxidant activity. The consumption of commercial berry fruit juices available in Serbian markets may deliver great health benefits through the supply of natural antioxidants.

AB - Poly(vinylidenefluoride)–ZnO (PVDF–ZnO) nanocomposites with mechanically activated ZnO nanoparticle fillers were investigated using thermal and mechanical analysis and AFM and PFM. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) investigated the effect of ZnO nanoparticles on the crystallinity of the polymer, under controlled heating and cooling. Atomic force (AFM) microscopy was used to record the surfaces of the samples. Nanocomposite surface roughness shows the presence of the different phases inside of the matrix, where rough samples contain a higher proportion of the β phase. PFM was performed to investigate the piezoresponse of the composites. Nanoidentation showed that the mechanical activation of the filler (ZnO) increases the Young modulus with the activation time. Molecular simulations in periodic systems (PVDF–ZnO spherical nanocluster and nanocylinder composite) were used to investigate the influence of particle size and shape on the Young modulus of different phases of PVDF.

AB - High concentrations of hydrophobic MFI zeolite (26.0-51.3 wt%) were successfully embedded in poly(meth-acrylic acid) (PMAA) network in simple, one-pot synthesis of PMAA-MFI composite hydrogels. The effects of zeolite concentration regarding pure PMAA xerogel, for all of the investigated properties (primary structural parameters, morphological properties, water swelling ability, thermal degradation mechanism and stability, and mechanical properties) were determined and discussed. The PMAA-MFI composite hydrogels had remarkably higher density than PMAA xerogel (1660/1420 kg m-3), higher crosslinking density (29/1.0 x 10-4), improved mechanics in the dry and swollen state (up to 4.9 times higher storage modulus) and lower swelling degree (42/ 420 g g-1), average molar mass between the network crosslinks (3.6/110 x 104 g mol-1), and distance between the macromolecular chains (64/710 nm). Despite high zeolite concentration, the composites kept porous hydrogel structure with uniformly dispersed zeolite particles. FTIR spectra disclosed the existence of functional groups of PMAA network and MFI zeolite that interacted mutually and led to increased crosslinking density. The effect of zeolite concentration on the thermal degradation mechanism was established. The composition -properties correlations were determined and described by the adequate linear or power law equations revealing the additive nature of the composites and the fractal structure of the networks. These correlations enable the achievement of desired properties by simple adjustment of the initial composition, i.e. zeolite con-centration. Therefore, this work presents the base for further development of tailor-made PMAA-MFI composite hydrogels aimed for specific application.
