AB - Stinging nettle (SN) is an extraordinary plant from the Urticaceae botanical family. It is well-known and widely used in food and folk medicine to treat different disorders and diseases. This article aimed to study the chemical composition of SN leaves extracts, i.e., polyphenolic compounds and vitamins B and C, because many studies ascribed high biological potency to these compounds and their significance in the human diet. Besides the chemical profile, the thermal properties of the extracts were studied. The results confirmed presence of many polyphenolic compounds and vitamins B and C. It also showed that the chemical profile closely correlated with the applied extraction technique. The thermal analysis showed that analyzed samples were thermally stable up to about 160 degrees C. Thermal degradation of samples UAE, MAE, and MAC took place in four steps, and sample SE in three steps. Altogether, results confirmed the presence of health-beneficial compounds in stinging nettle leaves and indicated the possible application of its extract in pharmaceutical and food industries as both a medicinal and food additive.

AB - The dual controlled release of emulgels makes them efficient drug delivery systems of increasing interest. The framework of this study was to incorporate selected L-ascorbic acid derivatives into emulgels. From the formulated emulgels, the release profiles of actives were evaluated considering their different polarities and concentrations, and consequently their effectiveness on the skin via a long-term in vivo study that lasted for 30 days was determined. Skin effects were assessed by measuring the electrical capacitance of the stratum corneum (EC), trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), melanin index (MI) and skin pH. In addition, the sensory and textural properties of emulgel formulations were compared with each other. The changes in the rate of the release of the L-ascorbic acid derivatives were monitored using the Franz diffusion cells. The obtained data were statistically significant, and indicated an increase in the degree of hydration of the skin and skin whitening potential, while no significant changes in TEWL and pH values were detected. The consistency, firmness and stickiness of the emulgels were estimated by volunteers applying the established sensory evaluation protocol. In addition, it was revealed that the difference in hydrophilic/lipophilic properties of L-ascorbic acid derivatives influenced their release profiles without changing their textural characteristics. Therefore, this study highlighted emulgels as L-ascorbic acid suitable carrier systems and one of the promising candidates as novel drug delivery systems.

AB - Composite hydrogels samples consisting of poly(methyl methacrylate/butyl acrylate/2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate) (poly-OH) and up to 60% reduced graphene oxide (rGO) containing rGO were synthesized. The method of coupled thermally induced self-assembly of graphene oxide (GO) platelets within a polymer matrix and in situ chemical reduction of GO was applied. The synthesized hydrogels were dried using the ambient pressure drying (APD) and freeze-drying (FD) methods. The effects of the weight fraction of rGO in the composites and the drying method on the textural, morphological, thermal, and rheological properties were examined for the dried samples. The obtained results indicate that APD leads to the formation of non-porous xerogels (X) of high bulk density (D), while FD results in the formation of highly porous aerogels (A) with low D. An increase in the weight fraction of rGO in the composite xerogels leads to an increase in D, specific surface area (SA), pore volume (Vp), average pore diameter (dp), and porosity (P). With an increase in the weight fraction of rGO in A-composites, the D values increase while the values of SP, Vp, dp, and P decrease. Thermo-degradation (TD) of both X and A composites takes place through three distinct steps: dehydration, decomposition of residual oxygen functional group, and polymer chain degradation. The thermal stabilities (TS) of the X-composites and X-rGO are higher than those of the A-composites and A-rGO. The values of the storage modulus (E') and the loss modulus (E") of the A-composites increase with the increase in their weight fraction of rGO.

AB - Determining the complex vibrational groups for each Raman spectrum band due tosubstantial bands overlapping was a challenge of many researchers. Using an example offairly complex organic molecule of indigo carmine, this work exemplifies the applicationof Facio software in order to give an illustration of deconvolution of complex indigocarmine Raman bands. Moreover, this work yields a better agreement of the Ramanspectrum calculated of indigo carmine and experimental ones compared to the literaturedata. This fact makes the work important in terms of singling out the vibrational groupstypes in a molecule for each band in the Raman spectrum.

AB - As commercial Li-ion batteries are chiefly composed of a toxic and flammableelectrolyte, as well as that Li itself is also toxic and not economical for widespreaduse due to its rare metal nature, the aim of this work is to create an aqueous Zn-ionbattery that contains the same cathode material as used in Li-ion batteries. Thematerials ZnMn2O4 and ZnCr0.15Mn1.85O4 were synthesized through glycine nitratecombustion. The initial material ZnMn2O4 was doped with Cr3+ in order to diminishJan-Teller distortion which prevents of Zn2+ ions to fully intercalate into theiroriginal sites of crystal lattice. The materials were characterized by X-ray powderdiffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while theelectrochemical properties were examined through cyclic voltammetry in aqueoussolutions of ZnCl2. The capacities obtained for the cyclic voltamogrammes recordedat 10 mVs-1 and 50 mVs-1 showed that cathode capacities for ZnMn2O4 amounted tobe 12.4 mAhg-1 for 10 mVs-1, as well as 4.8 mAhg-1 for 50 mVs-1. TheZnCr0.15Mn1.85O4 demonstrated 45.3 mAhg-1 for 10 mVs-1, as well as 12.6 mAhg-1for 50 mVs-1. The results obtained for the capacities of the original and dopedmaterial indicate that doping with Cr2+ partly diminishes the Jan Teller effect andfacilitates the intercalation of Zn2+ ions.

AB - Indigo carmine (InC) is broadly used blue dye in different industrial area. This work aims toobtain analytical curves for determination of InC in aqueous solutions. For such as purposes, twomethods were used: UV/VIS spectrophotometry and the kinetic method based on Briggs-Rauscher (BR) oscillatory reaction, and compared in terms of methods sensitivity whichexpressed as limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ). To the best authors' knowledge, as candidate for proposed analytical method, the BR oscillatory reaction was appliedfor the first time to InC quantification. The results obtained show that kinetic method using BRoscillatory reaction has a quite lower LOD and LOQ making this method more acceptable todetermine an unknown concentration of InC dissolved in water, compared to UV/Visspectrophotometric method.

AB - In this study, the influence of the mowing and drying on the chemical profile, thermal behavior, antioxidant activity (DPPH, CUPRAC, FRAP, ABTS, HRSA, and TBARS), microbiological data (Candida albicans (ATCC 10231), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Candida albicans (ATCC 10231), Bacillus subtilis (ATCC 6633), Proteus vulgaris (ATCC 13315), Proteus mirabilis (ATCC 14153) and Aspergillus niger (ATCC 16404) and cytotoxic activity of peppermint samples (HeLa, LS-174, A549, and MRC-5) was investigated. Chemical profiles showed that mowing did not have a significant impact on essential oil composition compared to drying. Menthone was the principal compound in essential oil from the fresh material, while menthol was the main compound in the samples from the dried ones. These differences influenced the biological activity of the samples, where fresh had better antioxidants, while dried had better antimicrobial activity. Thermal analysis showed that samples completely evaporated to about 120-123 degrees C in non-isothermal conditions, while in isothermal conditions the time required for complete evaporation was 20-30 min, depending on the sample. An artificial neural network model was developed, for the anticipation of antioxidant activity. These models showed good prediction properties (the r2 value during the training cycle for output variables was 1.000).

AB - To research potential replacements for LiMn2O4, this work carries out a synthesis of ZnMn2O4 (ZMO) through the glycine-nitrate combustion. XRPD validates its phase characterization; electron microscopy confirmed the presence of single phase ZMO in the form of curvy and rod-shaped sub-micron sized particles at an average of 113 nm. This work is novel for its electrochemical measurements of ZMO as a cathodic material for alkali-ion batteries, performed by cyclic voltammetry in aqueous solutions of ZnCl2 and NaNO3 ranging from 5 to 100 mV s(-1) polarization rates, yielding stable capacities for both electrolytes. The highest capacities were obtained for the polarization speed of 5 mV s(-1) for both electrolytes. Their cathode capacities were 11.3 and 27.2 mA h g(-1) for ZnCl2 and NaNO3, respectively. Concerning Na-ions batteries, the surface storage is the deciding factor due to the adsorption of Na+ ions on the lambda-MnO2 phase. Unlike Zn-ions, Na+ ions cannot intercalate into the spinel structured materials.

AB - Indigo carmine is a commonly used industrial blue dye. To determine its concentration in a commercially available food dye composed of a mixture of indigo carmine and D-glucose, this paper characterizes it through (ATR, KBr) FTIR micro-Raman as well as UV/Vis and clock: Briggs-Rauscher (BR) oscillatory reaction methods. The indigo carmine was detected in the bulk food dye only by applying micro-Raman spectroscopy, indicating a low percentage of the indigo carmine present. This research provides an improvement in the deviations from the experimental Raman spectrum as calculated by the B97D/cc-pVTZ level of theory one, resulting in a better geometrical optimization of the indigo carmine molecule compared to data within the literature. The analytical curves used to determine indigo carmine concentrations (and quantities) in an aqueous solution of food dye were applied by means of UV/Vis and BR methods. BR yielded significantly better analytical parameters: 100 times lower LOD and LOQ compared to commonly used UV/Vis. The remarkable sensitivity of the BR reaction towards indigo carmine suggests that not only does indigo carmine react in an oscillatory reaction but also its decomposition products, meaning that the multiple oxidation reactions have an important role in the BR's indigo carmine mechanism. The novelty of this research is the investigation of indigo carmine using a clock BR reaction, opening new possibilities to determine indigo carmine in other complex samples (pharmaceutical, food, etc.).

The novelty of this research is the investigation of indigo carmine using a clock BR reaction, opening new possibilities to determine indigo carmine in other complex samples (pharmaceutical, food, etc.).",

AB - The essence of this study is synthesis of a newly developed and efficient heterogeneous catalyst based on aluminum oxide support promoted with potassium iodide (KI) as active dopant responsible for pronounced catalyst activity. Modified sol-gel, reflux and hydrothermal method were used for synthesis of aluminum-oxide support using aluminum isopropoxide as a precursor. The gamma-Al2O3 support and KI/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst samples were examined by various experimental techniques. Effects of several operational parameters were considered and those are: methanol to sunflower oil molar ratio, catalyst loadings, reaction time and reaction stirring rate. The obtained results indicated that modified sol-gel method for synthesis of gamma-Al2O3 catalyst support is the most favorable for obtaining the catalyst with superior catalytic performances in transesterification of sunflower oil. A maximum conversion (triglycerides to methyl esters) of 99.99% was achieved using the SG-KI/gamma-Al2O3-770 catalyst under following optimal process parameters: 15:1 methanol to sunflower oil molar ratio, 2.5 wt% catalysts loading, 600 rpm stirring rate and 4 h of the reaction run.

AB - Stinging nettle is annual plant from Urticaceae family used as food and medicine. Due to the nonsufficient data, this work aimed to isolate the bioactive compounds from the stinging nettle leaves by supercritical carbon dioxide. Extracts were analyzed and assessed for antioxidant and cytotoxic activities. Main fatty acids were alpha-linolenic (31.06-58.42 mg/g E), palmitic (9.17-13.12 mg/g E), and linoleic (10.93-16.51 mg/g E) acids. Chlorophylls (33.00-7365.11 mg/100 g E) and carotenoids (166.88-722.62 mg/100 g E) were also found in all samples. Four empirical kinetic equations were effectively utilized for kinetic modeling of supercritical fluid extraction. As per proper statistical features, empirical models show good concurrence with experimental data. The numerical modeling of a process is gainful to foresee the process conduct and furthermore extend the methodology from laboratory to industrial scales. The principal component analysis was used to visualize the fatty acids profile, antioxidant capacity, and cytotoxic activity of extract.

AB - The aim of this study was to provide information on the phenolic and sugar profiles of different parts of the buckwheat plant, which can define that buckwheat is a functional food, with a high nutritional value and very useful for human health. Therefore, the extracts of buckwheat leaf, stem, and flower, as well as buckwheat grain were analysed for the content of polyphenol and antioxidant tests. The identification of a notable number of phenolic compounds and quantification of sugars in different parts of buckwheat indicates that buckwheat is a highly valuable plant. A total of 60 phenolic compounds were identified (18 cinnamic acid derivatives, 14 flavonols, 13 flavan-3-ols (including proanthocyanidins), 10 hydroxybenzoic acid derivatives, and 5 flavones) using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC), coupled with a hybrid mass spectrometer which combines the Linear Trap Quadrupole (LTQ) and OrbiTrap mass analyzer. The highest number of phenolic compounds was found in the analysed buckwheat flower sample, and then in the leaf, followed by the grain and the stem. In addition, the sugar profile of buckwheat leaf, stem, flower and grain, as well as the buckwheat pollen and the nectar was analysed. Hence, 16 sugars and 5 sugar alcohols were detected by the high-performance anion exchange chromatography (HPAEC) with a pulsed amperometric detector (PAD). Sucrose was found in a significant amount with the highest content in buckwheat leaf. Trisaccharides had similar accumulation in the sample extracts, while disaccharides dominated in buckwheat leaf, followed by nectar and pollen. The sugar alcohols showed the highest content in buckwheat grain, where erythritol was predominant. The obtained results show that buckwheat is very rich in phenolic compounds and sugars. In addition to grain, the other parts of the buckwheat plant can be used as a very good source of different classes of phenolic compounds. This study provides useful information on the distribution of phytochemicals in different parts of the buckwheat plant, which contribute to the maintaining of the status of buckwheat as a functional food.

AB - Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) is a plant worldwide cultivated mainly for essential oils, extracts, and as a spice. Up-to-date results showed diversity in composition of the essential oils, which may influence their quality, biological activity, and thermal properties. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the chemical composition, antimicrobial activity, and thermal properties of the rosemary essential oils originating from Serbia and Russia. Additionally, oils were added to the sunflower oils in order to investigate possible antioxidant activity during the frying. Investigation of the chemical profile marked alpha-pinene, eucalyptol, and camphor as the most abundant compounds in both oils. However, overall composition influenced in such manner that Russian oil showed significantly higher antimicrobial activity, while Serbian oil proved to be better antioxidant agent in case of frying of sunflower oil. This would significantly influence possible application of the oils, which could be used as an antioxidant agent for extension of the food shelf life, or antimicrobial agent for protection against different microbial strains.

AB - Six ethanolic extracts, obtained from anise, fennel, lavender, sage, mint, white horehound and their mixture were directly applied onto cellulose (viscose) fabric to impart antimicrobial and antioxidant functionality for its potential use as a wound dressing. Antimicrobial activity of treated fabrics against gram-positive bacteria S. aureus and yeast C. albicans, as common skin pathogens, was determined by agar diffusion test. The most effective against both microorganisms was viscose with anise, fennel, and mint, whereby clear inhibition and suppression zones were detected. The oxidation of viscose, intended to improve sorption properties and consequently adsorption of extracts, increased the antimicrobial activity of viscose with a mixture of extracts. The antioxidant activity of fabric samples with extracts, determined by 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, was significantly higher when compared to the untreated viscose sample (2.38 %) and ranged from 11.82 % for viscose with fennel up to 87.71 % for viscose with sage. Oxidation of fabric before sorption of extracts mixture contributes to higher antioxidant activity (68.81 %). Direct impregnation of bioactive plants extracts onto the fabric represents low cost and simple method, which makes it suitable for obtaining eco-friendly, low-cost disposable medical textiles with the therapeutic and prophylactic role.

AB - The main goal of this study was to establish the chemical profile of Osage orange (Maclura pomifera) leaf extracts, obtained by conventional maceration technique, and to examine its antimicrobial activity. The identification and quantification of the extract compounds were done using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography, with a diode array detector coupled with triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry techniques. Thirty-one polyphenolic compounds were detected and identified in the ethanolic extracts, whereby 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid was found to be the dominant compound. Among other compounds, pentacosane and palmitic acid were the most abundant compounds in the dichloromethane extract. The preliminary antimicrobial activity screening shows that Gram-positive bacteria tend to be more sensitive to the investigated extracts. The highest antimicrobial activity was determined against Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 19433 and Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 35152. From these results, Osage orange leaves can be considered as plant material with significant antimicrobial properties.
